Hopefully the temperature will start dropping, to give us our normal 3 weeks of 'Real Winter', real meaning -25 F (that's - 31.66 C), The roads on the lake will be safer with up to 6' ( 2 m ) of ice.
Up here, a walk on a clear moonlit night, when the wind off the prairies goes to sleep, is paradise. Just make sure your wearing your 'Block Heater' ( a Toque), your Sorel boots and your garbage mitts.
The idea of this newsletter is to sell stuff. But, then again, Trade and Commerce can wait a bit ! This job is, ( most of the time), is far too much fun. It never hurts to fall back on a quote from that famous philosopher, Bugs Bunny who said :
" Don't take life to serious, you won't get out alive. "
So in that vein . . . Time out.
Time in again . . . . Christmas is gone, yet still the Breitling and TAGHeuer guys still roll out the advertisements. Thankfully, the Electric Shaver guys have gone back with the bears to hibernate for another year. Don't you just miss 'Mr. Remington's' face ? { North Americans understand this }
About last September out comes the 'D50' Advertisements. Great. Out BMW Marine D50's are getting famous! Well not quite. It seems Nikon likes that model too. But that's BMW's property ! Our engine model number! Did Nikon consider that ? Or did BMW's legal eagles not notice ? Non ? Non! Oui ? Well, No harm ! No foul !
On the + side, Isn't Nikon to camera's what BMW is to cars ?
Name, Quality and Power, the Nikon D50 can easily be equated to a new 330i or even an M3. Easier to operate than BMW's infamous 'I Drive' ? But that's just 'Another Story'.
Stay tuned...
Close your eyes. Picture this:
You're sailing the Caribbean, and on board your
Hans Christian, closing in on Gustavia, St. Barts, not a cloud in the sky, Your Rolex watch is a bit lost, for time is not of the essence. 'Your' D50 diesel, down below, takes her noon siesta. A light breeze, dances, filling the sails. The Captain (you) is at the wheel, all smiles. Your happy 'Bride', is snapping pictures of your Coppertone grin, proud of 'Her' D50. Sharing the instant replays she questions: " After we're tied up, sitting with our rum punches, should we e-mail some pics to your London and New York offices ? "
Talk about breeding envy! . . .

Now the Commercial:
You can buy a pair of new D50's, and yes we'll take your Yanmar in trade. A D50 for you and a D50 for her.
And you get to enjoy share each others treasures.
Yes, we have a February 'Special' on a Demo D50-2. What you save in February will pay not only for the Nikon, but also the First Class seats to Florida, a case of $100.00 Champaign and as much Florida shrimp as the Hans Christian's fridge will hole.

Ambassador Holzer

There are Germans and then there are 'Bavarians'. BMW, as we know, is a 'Bavarian' company.
Alfred Holzer, started out life in Bavaria, just south of Munich. At 19 good fortune arrived, and for close on the next 50 years he sank his roots in American's Midwest. He started out as a Mercedes Technical rep, servicing the odd 'Gull Wing' problem.
In Minneapolis, he raised his family and started his business, servicing German automobiles. After enough years in the automobile business, they built a highway through it. Fate next took him up that road to Bayfield in Wisconsin. On Lake Superior's sailing heaven. The marina was built and the Schooner bought.
Now, Ambassador Holzer has established a reputable business, rebuilding sailboat engines. With his 'Bavarian' touch, the customers line up. If it's a Volvo or a Yanmar or a BMW, there's a good chance you'll find a good rebuilt here at a fair price.

These engines are unique in that they are classed as a 'Tunnel Bore Engine'. The difference from a conventional engine is the block design. In conventional engine design, the crankshaft is bolted onto the bottom of the engine block.
In a 'Tunnel Bore' Block, the skirt of the block is extended lower, with the oil pan bolted to the bottom. But the crankshaft is threaded into one end of the block, much like camshaft on a V8 engine. This design strengthens the crankshaft support making it more integral with the engine.
'Tunnel bore' blocks are used in race engine design, apparently popular with companies such as Ferrari. And further on block design, another variation is the Mono-block. Here the head is not separate, but part of the block. The valves are installed from the bottom, before the pistons, also installed from the bottom, are put up into place. Steyr in Austria use this design.

What is it about the Aircraft Types that they end up our customers ? Commercial pilots from Texas and Brazil, Mechanics from California, Private Pilots in New England and Florida and a quality control inspectors at Short in Ireland, all arrive sooner or later. If you have a Beaver on Floats you can land at our dock ! Harrison Ford owns a Beaver. Maybe he has a BMW powered sailboat ? Long ago, coming out of school, my personal wish was to work at DeHavilland.
Flying and Sailing have something in common, much like skiing and sailing I guess. Interesting !
A recent newspaper article grabbed my attention.

There's a new aircraft on the horizon called the VLJ or Very Light Jet.
Eclipse Aviation already has 1500 firm orders for their model 500. At US $1.3 million each, that's more than 'pocket money'. Cessna arrives next with their Citation Mustang at US $ 2.4 Million. And last is, Bombardier's nemeses, Embraer of Brazil, with their Phenom 100 at US $ 2.75 million.
And now for the interesting part; the engines to push these 'Baby Boomer' hot rods.
Enter P&WC, Pratt & Whitney Canada, with their new PW600 series. Henry Ford's 'Production line comes to the aircraft industry.
The engine details are:
- Price $250,000.00 each.
- Power : 840 HP.
- Speed 450 MPH.
- Design : 40 % few parts.
- Logistics : 100 less parts vendors.
- Assembly time: 8 hours.
- Production line: 60 feet.
- Building size : 5500 ft2.
- Initial design cost : $ 75.0 million.
- Size : Slightly larger that a beer Keg.
This is looking like a great Success story. The man behind it is 44 year old P&WC President, Alain Bellemare. For more information visit the
Pratt & Whitney Canada website.

In conversations with a BMW employees, it often gets mentioned that Marine and Aircraft engines are part of BMW's Heritage. BMW treasures their history and their heritage, which dates back almost 100 years. The question then comes is Pratt & Whitney or Pratt & Whitney Canada for sale?
Stay tuned...

Now to add the Balance that my Real Estate Lady requested.
If you recall, she liked our newsletter, but said: "Engines, Engines, Engines".
Mr. Mayle, the author, is an expat Brit, who retired to the south of France. This book made him and Provence famous.
As English speakers, this book may give you a 'Window' into the French and the way they love to eat and live. What the 'Rural French' think of Paris' Parisiennes, their Government and their love of Hunting . . .
Having already read his 'Toujour Provence' , his humor is quite 'British'. Each chapter of A year in Provence, is a month, starting with January. By July he picks up speed and form. From August, here's a tid bit . . . .
. . .The beauties of nature were loudly praised every evening on the ramparts of Menerbes, and I particularly liked the comments of an elderly English couple as they stood looking out over the valley.
" What a marvelous sunset," she said.
" Yes," replied the husband. " Most impressive for such a small village." . . .
